To be clear, I certainly don’t regard either the issue of Evil nor the work of Catholic writers like, say, Augustine or Erasmus, to name just two of many examples, as archaic. But while I have a personal faith, I must admit that I remain skeptical of the literal idea of demonic spirits carjacking individual human bodies for sinister joyrides, & if such a thing exists, I’m afraid I would also be pretty skeptical of the likelihood that the rite of exorcism, Catholic or otherwise, or would be effective in combating it (I suppose it’s possible that exorcism might be useful as a psycho-drama therapy for people “possessed” by mental disorders, but I’m not qualified to say). If I’m mistaken in this skepticism (or even if I’m not!), please pray for my deliverance from this Evil…

Phil: Glad you enjoyed Barney’s Version; I really thought it was one of the stronger things I’d seen in a while. & yeah, Giammati’s about as good as it gets.M.V. I agree with pretty much everything you wrote. I was particularly moved by the relationship between Giamatti and Hoffman. Giamatti is a treasure. There are many great scenes here, but the one in brothel is stunning. For some reason, old age make up in movies usually looks horrible, but it is subtle and very effective here. I think the fact that it is restrained makes it work better. Almost a less is more theory. Giamotti's character is the show piece, but even the work done on Rosamund Pike is great. It's amazing what a simple hair style will do in aging someone.Philhttp://www.touchofevilproductions.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2918474934970337247.post-51673390393172842552011-01-29T04:38:56.951-08:002011-01-29T04:38:56.951-08:00Dear MV,

However if the facts you assert in the movie than I disagree with your assertion.

The usual theological perplexities toward this archaic ritual arise in the mind of a logical viewer—the movie asserts, for instance, that devils prefer to remain incognito in the human world, which makes one wonder why they can’t resist telling the exorcists things that the possessed person shouldn’t be able to know. Are they just showoffs?

I would like to point you and your readers to a few of my posts on the subject. My hope is to persuade you that the work of the dark spirit ongoing and Catholic theology in regards to the work of the Devil and the Salvation offered to all Mankind is not archaic but timely.

http://goodjesuitbadjesuit.blogspot.com/search?q=exorcism

http://goodjesuitbadjesuit.blogspot.com/search?q=angel

JMJ

Joseph FrommJoseph Frommhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16759274486679530625noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2918474934970337247.post-82436682750096400622011-01-29T04:38:08.673-08:002011-01-29T04:38:08.673-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.Joseph Frommhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16759274486679530625noreply@blogger.com
